Art at BCS

The Art Department of Birmingham Covington School provides students in grades 3 through 8 with a multifaceted program. Students develop their creativity in programs such as drawing, painting, sculpture, and print-making. Students have the opportunity to reflect on their work and be independently motivated and engaged in all forms of art.

The visual arts at BCS are taught to students based on realism. Students examine the real world then create imagery without using universal symbols. However, after practice, students are encouraged to be creative and “play with” their subject matter allowing them to make fantasy conceptions. Projects correlate with academic subjects when possible to promote interdisciplinary learning.

With development of realistic drawing skills as a core, children also experience painting, collage, sculpture, ceramics and woodworking projects each year. Woodworking is unique to BCS in the elementary grades.

Technology is an integral part of our program where students use the computer for research and to draw and paint original pictures without the use of clip art.

Currently students have art class as follows:

  • 3rd through 6th grades by homerooms twice per week, for one semester.
  • 6th grade sculpture class as an elective choice in lieu of instrumental music, twice per week all year.
  • 7th and 8th as an elective, twice per week all year.
