Hello BCS!

It was another great week at BCS!  If you haven’t “liked” Birmingham Covington School on Facebook yet, please do so and check out some pictures from the week.  Tomorrow is our district sponsored MLK Day Service Project Opportunity.  Although BPS schools will be closed, Berkshire Middle School will be open for the District-wide DRAW Community Service event on MLK Day, tomorrow, Monday, January 16 from 10AM-12PM. While BCS collected items at the end of December, BPS is still working to fill buckets for DRAW. ·        Do your neighbors/friends have their own businesses?

·        Do you have season tickets to a sports event and you don’t plan to use them all?

·        Do you have a vacation home/time share you won’t need to use?

·        Consider donating these or other items to our 2017 Blast Auction.

Below you will find links to the Blast 2017 Solicitation letter and Donation Form. Please contact Jennifer Peterson at jpeterson@educatingtogether.org with any questions or to pick up a donation. Donation information can also be entered directly at https://www.biddingforgood.com/blast.  We would like to end this letter by thanking you. Thank you for taking the time to consider our request, and know we deeply appreciate your dedication to BCS and our students.  Your Blast & Auction Chairs,

BBFA BOOK CLUB

Join BBFA for a book club with a focus on parenting. Our first book will be: Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol DweckIn this brilliant book, Dweck shows how success in school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every area of human endeavor can be dramatically influenced by how we approach our goals. People with a fixed mindset—those who believe that abilities are fixed—are far less likely to flourish than those with a growth mindset—those who believe that abilities can be developed through hard work, good strategies, and mentorship. Mindset reveals how great parents, teachers, managers, and athletes can put this idea to use to foster outstanding accomplishment. Thursday, January 26, 2017, 10:00am – 11:30am, Bloomfield Township Public Library (1099 Lone Pine Road, Bloomfield Township) Facilitator: Michelle Miletic, LMSW. RSVP or Questions: Email: info@bbfaprevention.org, Phone: (248) 419-2380. There is no charge to attend the discussion. See the BBFA Book Club Flyer.

BEAUMONT FREE STUDENT HEART CHECK

When: 2/11/17
Location: Seaholm High School Gym
Open To: All BPS students age 13-18
Registration:
www.Beaumont.org/student-heart-check
Questions: (248) 551-5707 or jennifer.shea@beaumont.org

This program will fill to capacity.  You are encouraged to register right away.

Every year, students die from sudden cardiac arrest due to abnormal heart structure or abnormal rhythms. To help detect young people who are at risk for sudden cardiac arrest, Beaumont offers free heart checks to high school students that include:

·        medical history evaluation

·        blood pressure check

·        physical examination

·        electrocardiogram, or ECG

·        echocardiogram, quick look

This type of cardiac screening is generally not included in the routine physical required before participating in school sports. The Student Heart Check is designed for students ages 13 to 18. Younger children are not typically screened because structural abnormalities including abnormal heart muscle thickening, which is the most common cause of sudden death in the United States, do not become apparent until later in adolescence.

Here are some helpful links.
