Hello BCS!

It was another great week at BCS!  If you haven’t “liked” Birmingham Covington School on Facebook yet, please do so and check out some pictures from the week.  In this time of thanksgiving each year, I like to post on my blog about the importance of giving thanks.  I titled this week’s post, Happiness Matters. In this time of thanksgiving, we all need to remember the power of gratitude and happiness and how one is the driver of the other.  Within the post, I also link other past posts that speak to positivity, gratitude and happiness.  Let me thank you sincerely for your partnership thus far this year in supporting the social, emotional, physical and academic growth our your student(s) and  working with our teachers to support the development of these amazing human beings – our students.  I, for one, am deeply grateful to be a part of this BCS community who is so passionate about supporting the growth and development of all of us, adult learners and student learners alike, as well as working to inspire “students to lead in the global community through a passion for learning, innovating, and inquiry & design.  BCS is a great place to be!

In our short week this week, I wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving recess, and may we all find happiness with our Relentless Gratitude!  Get ready for the “BCS Thanks-Living” board coming to our hallway’s collaborative space this week.

Wishing you well,

Mark Morawski

Character Connections Word of the week: HONESTY

Infuse this word into your conversations and share these quotes with your children as a character education focus.  There will be a new word every two weeks.

·       “Your conscience is the measure of the honesty of your selfishness. Listen to it carefully.” – Richard Bach

·       “Accuracy is the twin brother of honesty; inaccuracy, of dishonesty.” – Nathaniel Hawthorne

·       “The trite saying that honesty is the best policy has met with the just criticism that honesty is not policy. The real honest man is honest from conviction of what is right, not from policy.” – Robert E. Lee

A MESSAGE TO OUR MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM DR. NERAD

The following message from Dr. Nerad was or will be read to all middle and high school students in BPS.  At BCS, this was read on Friday (or will be read on Monday) to our students in grades 5-8 by their academic lab teacher as we continue to support all of our students in living into our BCS Moral Compass and Valuing our 3E’s, particularly post-election. Now, in the words of Dr. Nerad…

Dear Students – Over the course of the four years I have been your superintendent, I have had numerous opportunities to speak at community events.  My message has continuously been to share the excellent character and qualities of our students.  As you know, our great country has been through a difficult national election resulting in greater divisiveness in our society. This divisiveness has even been felt in our classrooms.  In recent days, I have come to learn that we have students who are worried whether they will be accepted for their differences and whether they will be teased mistreated or even bullied. No one should have these worries. As teachers, and administrators, it is our responsibility to ensure your learning environment is free of such worry.  Now, I am now asking for your help.  I have a great deal of faith in each of you that you can and will make certain that in our schools everyone feels valued and safe and is treated kindly.  Each of you can be a model for the rest of our nation and prove, despite our differences, that everyone will feel valued.  While I respect the right to hold various opinions that have surfaced during and after the election campaign, I am asking that any behavior that causes another student or groups of students to feel unsafe and threatened must be stopped. There are so many ways our differences can be expressed in a respectful and constructive manner.  Disrespectful behavior or interruption of anyone’s right to learn is unacceptable. Please know that we will not hesitate to discipline anyone who creates an unsafe situation for anyone else in our schools.  I know you will help our teachers and principals avoid this by being the great role models we know you are.  Thank you in advance for your help with this in making our Birmingham schools the best place to learn for all.

-Sincerely, Dr. Nerad, BPS Superintendent

BCS Peer-To-Peer Game Day is Coming

Parents – please encourage your 3rd 4th 5th and 6th grade students to participate in the BCS weekly game day. Beginning December 1st, and continuing every Thursday for the remainder of the academic year, BCS will have an adult monitored Peer-To-Peer Game day during the 3/4 and 5/6 lunch RECESS period. This program is being offered to support students with special needs in order to promote positive peer interactions. General Education students will be linked/partnered with students who could benefit from peer role models and the reciprocal and fun social interactions that take place during recess. Each Thursday, a staff member will be available during the lunch period to hand out a limited number of passes for the Peer-To-Peer Indoor Game area. Research shows that Peer-To-Peer supports and interventions have positive effects on academic, interpersonal and social development for both general education and special education students. More importantly, students enjoy the program and feel good about themselves. . . so please speak with your student about joining our Thursday Peer-To-Peer Game Day beginning December 1st.  For questions contact Lisa Fields at lfields@birmingham.k12.mi.us.
