November 13, 2016

Hello BCS!

It was another great week at BCS!  If you haven’t “liked” Birmingham Covington School on Facebook yet, please do so and check out some pictures from the week.  While the smiles, energy and passion to learn continued this week, the emotions among each of us, even our students, after the President election was finalized, provided a challenge to some as we work daily to live into the skills within our Moral Compass.  As I shared with students and staff at our Town Hall meetings on the first day of school, it’s rather easy to live into the character traits on our Moral Compass when we win and life goes our way, but it’s incredibly difficult to live into those traits when we lose and life doesn’t go our way.  Please reinforce with your children and each other the importance of “winning” with dignity and “losing” with grace!  No matter where we find our emotions post-election, a Positive Attitude, Honesty & Integrity, Respect & Kindness, Responsibility & Accountability, embedded within our Moral Compass, will guide our way.  At BCS, not matter what, we must value our 3E’s:  Education, Environment and Each Other!  We’ll continue this week with that theme as our teachers look forward to meeting with you at our fall conferences.

We have finished the first quarter and report cards will be available through PowerSchool tomorrow, Monday, November 14 for grades 5-8 and sent home via hard copy with our 3/4 students tomorrow as well.  Fall 2016 NWEA reports will come home this week on Monday in 3/4 report card envelopes and in the mail for student in grades 5-8.  We also look forward to seeing our families this week at conferences on November 16 and 17 from 1-4 PM and 5-8 PM (both days are half days for students with buses running at our 11:30 AM dismissal-no choice hour).

Planning for conferences with your child’s teachers – let’s keep a growth mindset at the forefront of our partnership in supporting our students’ learning.  When you attend parent-teacher conferences this Wednesday or Thursday, consider asking questions that are focused on the learning process and effort in learning, not only on results or “the grade”. Here are a few questions that keep our focus on a growth mindset vs. a fixed mindset:

·       Is my child an active participant in class?

·       What are the areas of growth for my child?

·       How does my child react to the mistakes he/she makes academically, socially or behaviorally?

·       How does my child show risk-taking in class?

Our teachers look forward to seeing you at this week’s conferences.

And finally…check this out!  Our BCS community rallied and sent in 447.1 pounds of candy in our Treats for Troops collection drive after Halloween.  Thank you for your support of this effort.  The troops are going to love it!  Happy Veterans Day this past Friday!

BCS is a great place to be!  We’re looking forward to our second great week of learning together at BCS!

Wishing you well,

Mark Morawski

BCS Peer-To-Peer Game Day is Coming

Parents – please encourage your 3rd 4th 5th and 6th grade students to participate in the BCS weekly game day. Beginning December 1st, and continuing every Thursday for the remainder of the academic year, BCS will have an adult monitored Peer-To-Peer Game day during the 3/4 and 5/6 lunch RECESS period. This program is being offered to support students with special needs in order to promote positive peer interactions. General Education students will be linked/partnered with students who could benefit from peer role models and the reciprocal and fun social interactions that take place during recess. Each Thursday, a staff member will be available during the lunch period to hand out a limited number of passes for the Peer-To-Peer Indoor Game area. Research shows that Peer-To-Peer supports and interventions have positive effects on academic, interpersonal and social development for both general education and special education students. More importantly, students enjoy the program and feel good about themselves. . . so please speak with your student about joining our Thursday Peer-To-Peer Game Day beginning December 1st.  For questions contact Lisa Fields at lfields@birmingham.k12.mi.us.
