January 24, 2016

Hello BCS!

It was another great week at BCS!  Smiles, energy and a passion to learn remained evident. Please be sure to check out some pictures from the week on the Birmingham Covington School Facebook page.  If your child is interested in being the February Student Spotlight, please click Student Spotlight, complete the form and submit it by this Friday, January 29, 2016.

Following are two local service and support opportunities…

How about reaching out to support our neighbors up North in Flint suffering from a tragic water crisis?  Our BCS Service Learning Team wanted to share some information with you if your family and you are interested in volunteering and/or donating to help Flint residents affected by the water crisis.  Click here (or read further in this WAG) for information on nearby water drop off locations, where to volunteer, and where to make monetary donations to support our Michigan friends in Flint!

Brooklyn Pizza is celebrating 20 years downtown, and in honor of the occasion will be donating all profits from its downtown Birmingham location to the Birmingham Education Foundation and Wish Upon A Teen! Make sure to place your order on Sunday to benefit our schools, or drop in to the restaurant to see “Celebrity Pizza Chefs” (firmly wrapped in quotes) including Dr. Daniel Nerad, Mr. Jim Lalik, Mr. Tim Cibor, and Mr. Jim DeWald.  And, If you come by between 4:00 & 5:00 PM, you’ll see yours truly serving up some tasty Za! Following is the detailed schedule of “Celebrity Chefs”:

We could really use your input!  The CECAC, a community school advisory group, is conducting a community survey to help inform the BPS Board of Education. Please take a moment to take the community survey linked here. You will have an opportunity to expand on your answers and help us improve our district work.  The survey will close on Monday, Feb. 1, 2016.

Please consider donating an auction item to our BCS Blast!  As you know, we are hosting our annual fundraiser, the BCS Blast on Sunday, March 13, 2016 and we are in need of auction items. Please check in with your networks and contacts to help add a personal connection to this year’s blast.  For example…Do you run your own business or do your neighbors/friends have their own businesses from which an item or service could be donated?  Do you have season tickets to a favorite team or venue and you don’t plan to use them all?  Do you have a vacation home/time share you won’t need to use?  Let’s get creative and donate items for our Blast Auction.  Please read the Blast 2016 Solicitation letter and Donation Form for more information and contact Jennifer Peterson at jpeterson@imaginefirst.com with any questions.  Donation information can also be entered directly at our Blast Auction site at https://www.biddingforgood.com/blast.  Thank you for taking the time to consider this important request and know how much I appreciate your dedication to BCS and our amazing students.

You should have received in the mail your student’s M-STEP scores from last spring’s 3rd -8th grade state assessment. A newly developed video is now available from the Michigan Department of Education which summarizes M-STEP and walks viewers through how to read and interpret student scores within the M-STEP Parent Report. View video at the following link: https://youtu.be/AM55xZ-ZuNU.

BCS is a great place to be!  Check out the pictures from the week on our Facebook Page.  We’re looking forward to another great week of learning at BCS!

Character Connections Word of the week: PERSEVERANCE

·         “It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.” – Albert Einstein
