November 8, 2015

Hello BCS!

It was another great week at BCS!  Smiles, energy and a passion to learn continued.  If you haven’t “liked” Birmingham Covington School on Facebook yet, please do so to check out some pictures from the week.  Also, check out our November Student Spotlight with Paloma (grade 3) who was randomly selected from the entries to be this month’s BCS Student Spotlight!

This week is another exciting week at BCS.  Our students will be meeting in their cross-age (3-8) Character Connections teams this week on Thursday afternoon.  We’d like our students to Wear Red, White and/or Blue on THURSDAY in honor team unity and Veteran’s Day (which is the day before).

As we have been preparing for the bittersweet departure of our longtime Spanish Teacher, Angela Geisler with hugs and celebrations over these past several weeks, we wanted to let you know that Angela’s last day at BCS will be next Friday, November 13 (though she’ll be back for conferences and to help transition our new team member).  We also wanted to let you know that we have hired our new Spanish teacher Lydia Tiseo as the newest member of our incredible BCS team.  Lydia’s first day with us will be Monday, November 23.  Lydia comes to BCS with eight years of teaching experience in a K-8 school in which she has taught 3rd through 8th grade Spanish and directed a Spanish Drama club for middle school students.  She also was able to share her own cultural heritage with students, taking student groups to Ecuador for a week during spring break.  In addition to her teaching experience, she has also served as Athletic Director, overseeing six athletic programs and coaching volleyball for three seasons.  Lydia and her husband Alex recently moved to West Bloomfield and celebrated their first year of marriage this past July.  She enjoys traveling, being outside, and spending time with her family.  Lydia is excited to join the BCS staff and be a part of this great community, and I am thrilled to welcome Lydia to our amazing BCS team!

Just a reminder that first quarter Report Cards will be released tomorrow, Monday, November 9.  Grade 3/4 cards will be sent home with students at the end of the day and grades 5-8 reports will be available online via PowerSchool.  Students in grades 5-8 will receive grades in all subject areas within a student’s schedule, while grades 3/4 will be receiving Standard Based Grades in the core subject areas (English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies).  Our co-curricular teachers at the 3/4 level (Art, Eng. Tech., Phys. Ed. and Spanish) report out at the end of the second and fourth quarters January & June 2016.  Also, grades 3-8 students will be bringing home their NWEA Math & Reading fall assessment reports at the end of the day Monday.  Lastly, Parent/Teacher conferences will be Wednesday, November 18 and Thursday, November 19 from 1-4 PM and 5-8 PM.  3/4 and 5/6 digital sign-ups and the 7/8 conference letter were made available/emailed last Monday.  Remember the Book Fair is open in the media center during conferences – Sign-up to volunteer at: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/904094ea4a823a02-bcsfall.

BCS is a great place to be!  We’re looking forward to another great week of learning at BCS with more hugs, celebrations and well-wishes for our departing teacher Angela Geisler.  I stand in a long line of people who deeply respect and thank Angela for her years of service to our incredible BCS community!

Wishing you well,

Character Connections Word of the week: POSITIVITY

Infuse this word into your conversations/lessons with your family as a character education focus.  Talk about the quotes.  There will be a new word every two weeks.

·         “Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself: I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn’t arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I’m going to be happy in it.” – Groucho Marx

·         “Each problem has hidden in it an opportunity so powerful that it literally dwarfs the problem. The greatest success stories were created by people who recognized a problem and turned it into an opportunity.” – Joseph Sugarman

·         “The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude.” – Oprah Winfrey

M-STEP RESULTS – A MESSAGE FROM BPS

In the spring of 2015, Birmingham Schools students took Michigan’s new statewide test, the M-STEP, for the first time. At this time, the State has not released the M-STEP individual student scores or any subsequent reports.  This information is embargoed with no set timeline for distribution.  Please be reassured that as soon as the embargo is lifted by the State, we will process the scores and notify parents/guardians of the results of their child’s performance.  Our students continue to perform at top levels compared to peer districts thanks to our dynamic staff and the support of our dedicated BPS families.

GET YOUR PHOTOS IN THE YEARBOOK

Help the BCS Yearbook staff by contributing YOUR PHOTOS from BCS events to the yearbook! Students, parents, and staff can upload photos from various BCS events (sports, dances, academics, field trips, parties, etc) to the Jostens ReplayIt App (available in the App Store). This app is easy to download on your phone and uploads pictures to a secure website that can only be accessed by the BCS yearbook staff. More info here.

CHOICE HOUR INFORMATION

Many thanks to the families that turned in their student’s QII choice hour selection sheets on or before the deadline!  Hand scheduling 654 students is a daunting task for Kathy.  It is not a perfect process and sometimes mistakes are made.  Moving forward, list more than one choice each day that your child will be attending choice hour – three to four choices are preferred!  This helps with classes that go to lottery.  List the actual names of the classes not THE ARTS or ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES or SPORTS.  Continuing classes like Forensics, Science-Olympiad, RoboTech need to be listed as a choice.  If you do not include it then we will not schedule your child in the continuing class.  Lastly, please include payment with the choice hour selection sheet if your child will be attending a fourth/fifth day of choice hour.

2nd Quarter Choice Hour classes began on Wednesday November 4th

Choice Hour change forms are available in the office and online.  The deadline for requesting a Choice Hour class change is Thursday November 12th by 4:00 PMALL Choice Hour changes that are approved will go into effect on Monday November 16th.  Choice Hour drop refunds/credits will be processed for classes dropped during the Choice Hour change period.  No refunds/credits will be processed after the Thursday November 13th deadline.  Students can drop out of a choice hour class at any time during the quarter.

Thank you for always supporting the Choice Hour program!

Choice Hour is not optional!  Students are required to attend Choice Hour three days per week.  If you are requesting that your child is waived from the Choice Hour program then visit www.bcsonline.info for a waiver form.  Waivers require signature approval from Mr. Morawski or Mr. Hill.

If you do not understand the Choice Hour process, call Kathy Juriga at 203-4426 regarding scheduling and Linda Stone at 203-4625 regarding class content, attendance policies, choice hour absences, or if you are interested in teaching a Choice Hour class. Thank you for your continued support of the Choice Hour program.
