October 25, 2015

Hello BCS!

It was another great week at BCS!  Smiles, energy and a passion to learn continued.  If you haven’t “liked” Birmingham Covington School on Facebook yet, please do so to check out some pictures from the week.

The BCS Diversity Committee presents our 2015-16 Film Series.  Please join the BCS Diversity Committee for any OR all of the five films focused on local and global gender issues that affect each of us. All films will be shown in the BCS Media Center from 6:30-8:30 PM with a guided dialogue following each film.  The first film, Miss Representation, will be shown this Thursday, October 29. For the flyer with all the details and to RSVP, click here!

As you may recall, our counseling secretary Sally Battle announced her retirement about a month ago and her last day was this past Friday.  We as a staff spent the week celebrating with her through song, video and cards.  We sincerely thank Sally for her service to the BCS community and wish her well on her retirement.  I also wanted to let you know that the search committee and I have finalized our decision for Sally’s replacement in the counseling office and we are thrilled to announce Kathy Barnas as the newest member to our front office team.  Kathy has been an outstanding parent volunteer for us over the past 6 years, and her enthusiasm, organization, attention to details, work ethic and love of BCS will be a great match for our school team.  Please join me in congratulating Kathy and welcome her to the BCS staff!

Finally, we will celebrate Halloween on Friday, October 30 which is a half day for students.  At BCS, we welcome parents and guardians to join in our festivities which will begin with an all-school parade at 10:00 a.m.  Parents should remain outside to avoid congestion in our hallways (weather permitting; we’ll parade indoors if it’s raining), and the students will proceed outside (east end of building) starting with 3/4 followed by 5/6 and 7/8 students.  The parties will follow the parade immediately back in the students’ homerooms/academic labs around 10:30 a.m.  The parties will conclude at 11:15 a.m. to clean up and prepare for dismissal at 11:30 a.m. (no Choice Hour on half days). Please be sure your child is dressed in an appropriate costume in order to avoid scaring any of our younger students.  We ask that students avoid the following:

  • masks that cover the face (masks restrict vision, can lead to accidents, and often frighten our younger students)
  • blood-like makeup, real or pretend weapons (knives, guns, swords, etc.), evil, scary, or horror characters

Some suggestions for costumes include:  Inventors, Animals, clothing from an historical period, Presidents, Ethnic clothing, Community helpers (police, fireman…), Super heroes, Careers (doctor, teacher, engineer…), Book characters, Sports (football player, snowboarder, marathoner…), Friendly characters, Food. You could even develop a costume that embraces our BCS Theme: At BCS We Value the 3E’s – Education, Environment, Each Other!  Remember that children tend to “act” their costumes, so the appropriateness of the costume is important.  Thank you in advance for helping make this day an enjoyable one for our students, but also one where we can continue with a day of learning.  Happy Halloween!

BCS is a great place to be!  We’re looking forward to another great week of learning at BCS!

Wishing you well,

P.S.  Please do not block the parking spaces in the BCS parking lot in front of the swimming pool/shed area at any time (particularly arrival and dismissal times). Many of these parking spaces are assigned parking, including handicap spaces, which need to remain accessible at all times.  Students can be dropped off and picked up in either of our two drop off/pick up loops between the parking lots.  Thank you for your attention to this!

Character Connections Word of the week: COLLABORATION/TEAMWORK

A REQUEST FROM THE BOTTLE GREENHOUSE GROUP

We want to build a greenhouse made out of 2 liter bottles. The purpose of this is because we want to help reduce the amount of people who are suffering from hunger in Birmingham. Our goal is to collect 1,600 bottles this year to build a bottle greenhouse. After we build the bottle greenhouse, we will plant fruits and vegetables and we will send the fruit and vegetables to Gleaners (a food bank for people facing hunger). Students need to bring in 2 liter bottles with all the wrapping removed. The collection bin is located outside the front office.  Click 30-second video for more information

Thanks,

The Bottle Greenhouse Group

SCHOOL CLOSING PROCEDURES

The health and safety of students entrusted to our care during the school day is of the utmost importance to the district and to our staff. In general, our schools remain in session if it is at all possible. Inclement weather is the most common reason schools are closed, start times are delayed or students are dismissed early. In the event of a weather closing, you should receive a phone call from the district. If for some reason you do not receive a call and are questioning if school will be closed, you can:

• Listen for school closing announcements on major radio and television stations.

• Call the BPS information line recording. To reach the recording, call 248-203-3000 (the main BPS line) and press 4.

• Check the district website at www.birmingham.k12.mi.us.

The decision to close schools is made by the Superintendent upon the advice of the Manager of Transportation Services and local police authorities. Additionally, if schools are open, but weather conditions make the trip to school seem unsafe, parents/guardians are advised to keep their students at home. When conditions other than weather develop which may be detrimental to the health and safety of students or staff, a school or district closing may also be necessary. To inform families of closings, BPS will utilize the emergency alert phone system. For all closings, it is important that your contact information is up-to-date and correct.
