Hello BCS!

It was another great week at BCS!  Smiles, energy and a passion to learn continued.  If you haven’t “liked” Birmingham Covington School on Facebook yet, please do so to check out some pictures our first week.  Many of our 7/8 students just returned today from their trip to Philadelphia and New York City and pictures of their learning and fun are posted on our page.

Our October Student Spotlight submissions have been received and Avery A was picked from the random selection of entries.  Check our Avery’s submission online by clicking here and check out all the entries submitted posted on the Student Spotlight board in the main hallway at BCS.  Stay tuned for November’s link to submit where new students can enter or previous entries can resubmit the same information.  Thank you to all students submitting for the Student Spotlight.

We wanted to let you know that the BCS Diversity Committee Presents our 2015-16 Film Series.  Please join the BCS Diversity Committee for any OR all of the five films focused on local and global gender issues that affect each of us. All films will be shown in the BCS Media Center from 6:30-8:30 PM with a guided dialogue following each film.  The first film, Miss Representation, will be shown on Thursday, October 29. For the flyer with all the details and to RSVP, click here!

BCS is a great place to be!  We’re looking forward to another great week of learning at BCS!

Wishing you well,

Character Connections Word of the week: INTEGRITY

Infuse this word into your conversations/lessons with your family as a character education focus.  Talk about the quotes.  There will be a new word every two weeks.

·       “Character is higher than intellect.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

·       “Every job is a self-portrait of the person who does it. Autograph your work with excellence.” – Ted Key

·       “Character is much easier kept than recovered.” – Thomas Paine

UPDATED BCS CALENDAR – HALF DAY FOR STUDENTS ON 10/30/15

On the district calendar, Friday, October 30, 2015 should have read, “Elementary and BCS Students attend AM Only, Professional Development (PM)”.  A revised calendar is available here.  Please make note that Friday, October 30 is a half day for students at BCS with dismissal at 11:30 AM.  Please note:  The Halloween Parade will be at 10:00 AM and the parties will be from 10:30-11:30 AM (begin cleanup at 10:15.  More details will be forthcoming as the date draws near).

BCS Halloween Parade & Parties

BCS will celebrate Halloween on Friday, October 30 which is a half day for students this year.  At BCS, we welcome parents and guardians to join in our festivities which will begin with an all-school parade at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 30.  Parents should remain outside to avoid congestion in our hallways (weather permitting, we’ll parade indoors if it’s raining), and the students will proceed outside (east end of building) starting with 3/4 followed by 5/6 and 7/8 students.  The parties will follow the parade immediately back in the students’ homerooms/academic labs around 10:30 a.m.  The parties will conclude at 11:15 a.m. to clean up and prepare for dismissal at 11:30 a.m. (no Choice Hour on half days). Please be sure your child is dressed in an appropriate costume in order to avoid scaring any of our younger students.  We ask that students avoid the following:

  • masks that cover the face (masks restrict vision, can lead to accidents, and often frighten our younger students)
  • blood-like makeup, real or pretend weapons (knives, guns, swords, etc.), evil, scary, or horror characters

Some suggestions for costumes include:  Inventors, Animals, clothing from an historical period, Presidents, Ethnic clothing, Community helpers (police, fireman…), Super heroes, Careers (doctor, teacher, engineer…), Book characters, Sports (football player, snowboarder, marathoner…), Friendly characters, Food. You could even develop a costume that embraces our BCS Theme At BCS We Value the 3E’s – Education, Environment, Each Other!  Remember that children tend to “act” their costumes, so the appropriateness of the costume is important.  Thank you in advance for helping make this day an enjoyable one for our students, but also one where we can continue with a day of learning.  Happy Halloween!
