Hello BCS!

It was another great week at BCS!  Smiles, energy and a passion to learn continued.  If you haven’t “liked” Birmingham Covington School on Facebook yet, please do so to check out some pictures our first week.  We were thrilled this week to host our final Welcome Back Curriculum Night hosting our 7/8 parents/guardians.  We are now settled into the learning routines, schedules and experiences that make BCS a great place to be.

We look forward to our first PTSA meeting this Thursday, October 1 at 1:15 PM in the BCS Staff Development room.  To kick off each meeting this year, we will have a teacher share a program they’re implementing due to the support of funds from our amazing BCS PTSA. At our first meeting, Jordy Whitmer will share about Thinkering Studio at BCS; a program he designed and was enhance through funds from our PTSA this past year.  We hope to see you there!

Also, don’t forget that this Wednesday is our first Delayed Start of the year.  School begins at 9:48 AM, though our 3/4, 5/6, and 7/8 lunch schedules will run as normal.

BCS PROUD DADS ANNUAL MEETING – JOIN US! ARE YOU PROUD OF YOUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS?  Proud Dads, join us for our ONE and ONLY BCS Proud Dad’s Annual meeting on Monday, October 5 at 6:30-7:15 PM at the Dick O’Dows.  Click here for the flyer with all the details!  We need you there.  Plus, enjoy some Monday Night Football with other dads after the meeting.  Thank you in advance for your attendance! P.S.  Be sure to stay connected with BCS-related information:

Character Connections Word of the week: RESPECT

Infuse this word into your conversations/lessons with your family as a character education focus.  Talk about the quotes.  There will be a new word every two weeks.

·         To be one, to be united is a great thing. But to respect the right to be different is maybe even greater. Bono

·         Self-respect is the fruit of discipline; the sense of dignity grows with the ability to say no to oneself. Abraham Joshua Heschel

·         Respect for ourselves guides our morals, respect for others guides our manners. Laurence Sterne

A HEARTFELT LETTER FROM MR. JOSEPH

Dear BCS Students, Families and Community,

As you may have heard, my 16 year-old son Zachary was diagnosed in late August with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. While my wife Mary Beth and I were obviously concerned with this diagnosis, the good news is that this disease has a very high cure rate.  Zachary will undergo five rounds of chemotherapy at Beaumont hospital. After chemo, he will have three weeks of radiation. If all goes well, Zack will be done with treatment by January. We are very open about Zack’s condition and are happy to talk to people about his progress. I will send periodic updates to Mr. Morawski who will then share them with our BCS community.   We have an online care page set up which enables people to stay current on Zack’s condition and sign up to bring a meal to our home. Feel free to reach out, stay in touch and help out if you’d like.  Sign up and request to join the care page at the following link:

https://www.lotsahelpinghands.com/c/732847/.  We sincerely appreciate your concern, well-wishes and prayers.

Much Love,

Rick Joseph, Mary Beth Seefelt, Zack, Nick and Rodrigo

BCS Celebrates 20 Years!

Birmingham Covington School (BCS) is celebrating its 20th year with a community wide reunion on Saturday, November 28, 2015, 3:00-6:00pm. Past and present BCS families, current and former teachers, Principals, staff members, Board of Education members, and Administrators are invited to the school to reconnect with old friends, have ice cream, and share stories. BCS’s founding Principal, Dr. Dale Truding, will be on hand to greet alumni.  Current BCS Principal, Mark Morawski, has been sharing BCS highlights on The “BCS 20 Year Celebration” Facebook page. “We are looking forward to a great turnout as we celebrate our 20th year.  BCS is a Great Place to Be!” says Mark. Very characteristic of BCS’s founding principles and vision, students are involved in helping make the event a success. Eric Howell, current BCS student, is designing the event T-shirt available for purchase at the event, and Roy McCloud’s video production class is working on the film “BCS Through the Years” which will be shown at the event. A giant timeline depicting BCS’s 20 years will be on display, as well as other surprises. Guests will be able to see what’s new at BCS and visit the newly installed Fitz Hive, a reading nook located in the media center in memory of beloved teacher Karen Fitzgerald.  Additional details may be found on the event Facebook page, “BCS 20 Year Celebration”, or by calling the school office at 248-203-4444.
