Character Connections Word of the week:  COURAGE

Infuse this word into your conversations/lessons with your family as a character education focus.  There will be a new word every two weeks.

  • “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to your enemies, but a great deal more to stand up to your friends.” Dumbledore, Harry Potter
  • Courage is not living without fear.  Courage is being scared to death and doing the right thing anyway.” – Chae Richardson
  • Anyone can give up, it's the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that's true strength.” – unknown

Food allergy is a growing public health issue that impacts almost every school across the United States. Nearly 6 million children in the U.S. – which equates to 1 in 13, or roughly 2 in every classroom – have a food allergy.  Studies indicate that 16-18% of school-age children who have food allergies have had a reaction in school. In addition, in approximately 25% of the reactions that occur at school, the student had not yet been diagnosed with food allergy.  Help your child BE A PAL (protect a life) TO A FRIEND WITH A FOOD ALLERGY! BOND INFORMATION NIGHT W/Dr. Nerad – for BCS Parents

Please join me on Thursday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m. at Berkshire Middle School to discuss the school district’s 2015 bond proposal and how it affects our students and our community. This important ballot question will be on the May 5, 2015 ballot.  Your Board of Education and administration have spent years preparing for this bond proposal through strong fiscal stewardship and a dedication to our students. The results of those efforts are a bond proposal that keeps our current millage rate at 3.9 mills while providing our district with $66 million in needed funding for instruction spaces, safety and security improvements, building and site work and technology upgrades.  There will be no increase to the district’s debt millage with this bond proposal. The March 26 event is hosted by the PTA’s at Berkshire, Derby MS and BCS. Berkshire is located at 21707 W. 14 mile Road in Beverly Hills.I look forward to meeting with you and answering your questions.

Sincerely, Daniel Nerad-Superintendent

ILLNESS OF BERKSHIRE STUDENT, TREVOR SULLIVAN

Berkshire 8th grader Trevor Sullivan was diagnosed with a severe heart condition right before break and was airlifted to CS Motts Children’s Hospital at U of M Ann Arbor. Trevor’s parents received word this Monday that their son will need a heart transplant.

For more about Trevor’s story, click here. A fundraising page and a Facebook page for updates on Trevor’s condition have been created. Those interested in helping can visit Trevor’s Gofundme page to make a donation. Berkshire students have already stepped up to help their classmate, participating in student-driven fundraisers and showing their support. In addition, Blue Ribbons are being made and worn in support of Trevor and his family. The ribbons are being sold for a donation to help support TEAM TREVOR. If you are interested in ordering ribbons, please contact Brian Baldridge at bbaldridge@birmingham.k12.mi.us.

The Berkshire community and the district will continue to do all we can to support Trevor and his parents. Our thoughts are with them.
