March 1, 2015

Hello BCS!

It was another great week at BCS!  Smiles, energy and a passion to learn continued.  If you haven’t “liked” Birmingham Covington School on Facebook yet, please do so to check out new pictures from the past week’s experiences and learning that we post each week.

The Worldwide Blast is almost upon us!

Our annual BLAST Carnival is just around the corner, but the BCS “Worldwide” Blast auction has begun!  While the Blast celebration isn’t until Sunday, March 15 from 3:00-7:30 PM, the auction is live NOWThe BCS Blast is a great example of how a group of people can come together to bring about amazing opportunities for our students!

These past few years, BCS has asked our community more than ever to support us through tough economic times.  It is amazing to see how everyone pulls together, as a community, to make sure our learners have the same resources and opportunities as the other fortunate students that attended BCS in the past.  In spite of the economic downturn, we continue to raise the funding necessary from the Blast because of families like yours.  Thank you for your continued dedication to the students and staff at BCS.  It truly separates us from other schools!

In addition to supporting our science and technology focus, your generosity from previous Blasts has and continues to support other areas as well including our literature program, service learning efforts, Forensics, Math Counts, Science Olympiad, Lego Robotics, instrumental music, Proud Dad’s and many more curriculum-related activities. The only way we are able to provide these opportunities for your children is through your donations and volunteer support.  Quite simply, we need your donations and your volunteerism more than ever!

So start your bidding and offer to volunteer now at the auction website!  You can sign up to volunteer and bid on some AMAZING items including tickets, parking spaces and many more great items.  Let the bidding begin!  There will be new items added as the next few weeks go by, so keep checking throughout the auction.  The auction closes Friday, March 13 at 6:00 PM.  Tickets for the Blast are also available online now.  New this year is the chance to get a Blast spirit pack which includes a T-shirt and a 40 punch card!  Check out www.biddingforgood.com/blast for all the great information.

The most amazing thing about the BCS Blast is that funds that are raised go directly to enhance the educational opportunities for your children.  Please know that the BCS staff will continue to work incredibly hard to bring exciting and powerful learning experiences to each and every child.  Your support and generosity means a great deal to all of us and motivates our staff to continue the charge towards excellence.  Thank you again for your continued generosity.  We are excited to see you at the Blast on Sunday, March 15, 2015 from 3:30-7:30 PM.

To check out opportunities to support the Blast through donations or volunteerism, please be sure log on to our Blast web page at www.biddingforgood.com/blast.

Looking forward to The Worldwide Blast!

Wishing you well,

Mark Morawski

Character Connections Word of the week:  FLEXIBILITY

Infuse this word into your conversations/lessons with your family as a character education focus.  There will be a new word every two weeks.

  • “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.” – Albert Einstein
  • “I think there is a big and significant difference between being a leader and being a manager-leaders lead from the heart. You have to be analytical and flexible. Flexibility is one of the key ingredients to being successful. If you feel like it’s difficult to change, you will probably have a harder time succeeding.” – Andrea Jung
  • “Even under the most difficult circumstances you can have creative flexibility.” – Anne M. Mulcahy

TODAY – ONE LAST CHANCE TO SUPPORT WISH UPON A TEEN

This upcoming weekend, 2/28/15 and 3/1/15 there is one more opportunity to support the Wish upon a Teen fundraiser and help makeover children's hospital rooms at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.  This time, visit Brooklyn Pizza’s Birmingham location, bring in this flyer (or say you’re a BPS family) and 15% of the profits from Birmingham Public School families’ purchases will go to Wish Upon a Teen.  Thank you in advance for your support.

BCS BOND INFORMATION NIGHT AT BERKSHIRE

BCS Families – Please join me on Thursday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m. at Berkshire Middle School to discuss the school district’s  2015 bond proposal and how it affects our students and our community. This important ballot question will be on the May 5, 2015 ballot.  Your Board of Education and administration have spent years preparing for this bond proposal through strong fiscal stewardship and a dedication to our students. The results of those efforts are a bond proposal that keeps our current millage rate at 3.9 mills while providing our district with $66 million in needed funding for instruction spaces, safety and security improvements, building and site work and technology upgrades.  There will be no increase to the district’s debt millage with this bond proposal.  The March 26 event is hosted by the PTA’s at Berkshire and Derby middle schools and BCS. Berkshire is located at 21707 W. 14 mile Road in Beverly Hills.

I look forward to meeting with you and answering your questions.

Sincerely, Daniel Nerad-Superintendent

Our second semester is in full swing! As we frequently remind our BCS community, once the second half of the year begins, our minds are in two places; supporting our learning efforts for this school year and beginning the planning for next school year. We are about to begin the BCS scheduling process for the 2015-2016 school year. Please read this important letter (attachment linked below) very carefully, as it is filled with important information. ANNOUNCING THE NEW BIRMINGHAM PUBLIC SCHOOLS MOBILE APP!

BPS is pleased to announce that we have launched a new mobile app for parents and families. Working toward our Strategic Planning goals to promote strong communication with our families to aid in student success, this app will help us keep you informed using the latest technology and resources available. We also recognize that you are constantly on the go, multitasking and expecting information on-demand. With this in mind, we are proud to have our own mobile application, Birmingham PS, free for all parents, students, staff, alumni and community members who want to stay in touch with us. With Birmingham PS, you can check events and athletics schedules, connect with the district on social media and easily access important school and classroom resources—all right from your mobile device. The new mobile app puts all the important information in one, easy-to-use location, making it a breeze for you to access the content you need while on the go, from the device of their choice. Users can also enjoy custom feeds to the district and BCS. You can find our app by searching Birmingham PS in the iTunes App Store or Google Play. Once you have downloaded the app, you can select the schools you’re interested in following. A note to parents opting to use the “Follow a Student” feature on the app. Currently, following a student will provide you with notifications that you currently receive via phone or email (ex. Weather Calls or Bus Delays). Attendance features will be added in the future for high school students. To follow a student, please FIRST use this link and select “sign up” at the bottom. https://birmingham.bbcportal.com. The system will prompt you to enter your information before sending you an additional link via email. You may be prompted to download the Blackboard Connect app, but this is not the BPS app. Select “No thanks. Go to site.” to proceed. Enter your student’s ID, which is listed on their report card, as the “identification code.” And provide a phone or email address used in PowerSchool. Once this sign-up is complete, you can sign into the Follow a Student portion of the mobile app as prompted within the app.
