Hello BCS!

It was an emotional week of learning at BCS, but there is no doubt that we spent the week deepening our resolve and strengthening our relationship to the BCS 3E’ (Education, Environment and EACH OTHER) memorializing our dear colleague, teacher and friend Karen Fitzgerald.  At the point, as we honor and celebrate this great woman, “Thank You” is the theme that resonates.  One thing that hung over Karen was that she wanted to formally thank the BCS community for the $30,000+ check to her from the “Walk for Fitz” fundraiser in October.  A recent text from Karen before she passed away was shared with me where she wrote, Thank you [BCS] for the amazing a check! I am so honored that so many people did this for me. I honestly started crying when I saw it. I already have so much more hope!”  In a conversation this week with her husband, he thanked us and shared with me that the money our community donated to Karen and her daughters gave her so much hope and allowed Karen to focus on her life with her daughters and her battle with cancer.  He shared that this gave her a sense of peace.  In their words at the memorial service, on behalf of the 5/6 team, Elizabeth Cook and Rick Joseph, shared their “thank you, Mrs. Fitz.”  Thank you for…

  • always believing in us
  • your high expectations and your tenacity
  • your disciplined approach to life
  • your sense of humor
  • your generosity
  • knowing how to make life fun and brightening our every day

In the spirit of Karen, may we all hug a little tighter, care a little deeper, and love a little stronger.  There is no doubt in my mind that our BCS community is tighter, cares more deeply and is stronger for having Karen Fitzgerald a part of our lives.

We have a caring community at BCS indeed!  We look forward to a great week of learning and celebrating in this coming week.

Wishing you well,

Character Connections Word of the week:  PATIENCE

Infuse this word into your conversations/lessons with your family as a character education focus.  There will be a new word every two weeks.

  • “Be patient and understanding. Life is too short to be vengeful or malicious.” – Phillips Brooks
  • “Good character is not formed in a week or a month. It is created little by little, day by day. Protracted and patient effort is needed to develop good character.” – Heraclitus
  •  “We could never learn to be brave and patient, if there were only joy in the world.” – Helen Keller

HEALTH & SAFETY UPDATE

As you may know, there has been one confirmed case of measles in Oakland County.  There has also been an increase in the number of pertussis (whooping cough) cases in Michigan. You may have questions about measles and pertussis.  Your best source for answers to your questions is your family physician.  He or she is familiar with your child and can address your concerns with your child’s individual needs in mind.  Below are links to fact sheets about measles and pertussis that you may find helpful.  At this time, we do not have any confirmed cases of either disease.  We will be monitoring the situation closely and will advise you as new information becomes available.  Thank you.  -Marcia F. 5/6 HEALTH EDUCATION

The Birmingham Board of Education has established a program of instruction in health education.  The overall goal is for students to acquire the knowledge and skills they need to be healthy and to prevent disease.  Parents are encouraged to be informed and involved in the health education of their children.  According to the Revised School Code, you have the right to review the materials and curriculum content to be used in teaching reproductive health and communicable disease prevention which includes HIV/AIDS information.  The local board of education, in compliance with the statute, has made the materials and curriculum guides available for your review in the media center Monday, February 9 – Friday, February 13, 2015.  In addition, you have the right to observe instruction in your student’s classroom.  If you wish to do so, please call Mrs. Tamra Nast, (248) 203-4434, or email Mrs. Tammy Brown, TBrown@birmingham.k12.mi.us, to make arrangements for your observation.  Classes will be taught February 24th, 26th and 27th. The Revised School Code also allows you to excuse your student, without penalty, from participation in classes which focus on reproductive health, serious communicable diseases and/or HIV/AIDS information.  The statute allows you to excuse your student upon written notification to the school.  You have the option to exempt your student for this school year. Please check the appropriate box on the attached permission form and return it to your child’s science teacher by Friday, February 13, 2015. Click here for the form.
