Hello BCS!

It was another great week at BCS!  Smiles, energy and a passion to learn continued.  If you haven’t “liked” Birmingham Covington School on Facebook yet, please do so to check out new pictures from the past week’s experiences and learning that we post each week.

Did you know? Our 3/4 students are observing and fostering an environment for Salmon in their 3/4 science lab.  The salmon have hatched and the students are documenting data and observations over the course of these next few months looking forward to releasing them to their natural habitat this spring.  You can check out the growth process using the “Salmon Cam” at www.Salmoncam.blogspot.com.  This is another wonderful example of service learning at BCS (providing a service with the learning embedded into our curriculum.  Learn Globally, Serve Locally!

To that end….more social entrepreneurship from two of our BCS students…

Save the date/weekend for a family meal out:  Friday, February 6 - Sunday, February 8 to support our district wide Wish Upon a Teen fundraiser and help makeover children's hospital rooms at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.  BCS 6th graders Ania and Mia are leading this effort!  Come into Brooklyn Pizza's Troy location (3141 Crooks Road, Troy, MI 48084) any time that weekend, purchase pizza and 15% of the proceeds will go to this effort.  Click here for the flyer, and find out more about this service learning opportunity by viewing the 1-minute video. (To ensure the 15% donation, bring in the flyer or let Brooklyn Pizza know you’re part of the Birmingham Public Schools community.)

Wishing you well,

IMPORTANT ATTENDANCE REPORTING CHANGES

BPS has made some adjustments to our attendance policy (and daily attendance recording) in response to new Department of Education mandates. These changes should not affect the average absence.   However, there will be impact on those who frequently miss school and have nonexempt absences.  To see the new policy (Board Policy 5200) that will go to the Board of Education for approval in January, please review the information and changes by clicking here.  Additionally, find a newly required “Extended Absence Form” here.   Should you have any questions about the policy, please contact Mark Morawski or Jason Hill.  Thank you.

Question:  Do I need to have a doctor’s note for every illness/sick day my child has such as for a fever, cough or cold?

Answer:  For one or two day illness, it isn’t required to have a note from the doctor, though should you child absences from school increase, notes from the doctor due to illness will become important as related to the “Truancy Action Plan” at the above links.

Character Connections Word of the week:  CARING

Infuse this word into your conversations/lessons with your family as a character education focus.  There will be a new word every two weeks.

  • “The simple act of caring is heroic.” – Edward Albert
  • “Live so that when your children think of fairness, caring, and integrity, they think of you.” – H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
  • “Without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community.” – Anthony J. D'Angelo

HEALTH & SAFETY

Flu Season is Upon Us…

We are starting to see cases of Influenza A.  It is important that we continue to work with our children about good hygiene including proper hand washing and cough protocol.  If you have additional questions about the flu and your child’s health, please consult your family physician.  Following is a link to the fact sheet from the Oakland County Health Department:  http://www.oakgov.com/health/Documents/Facts%20Sheets/fs_influenza.pdf.  Thank you.

REMINDER FROM THE BCS OFFICE REGARDING ELECTRONIC DEVICES

If your student received a device for the holidays, please make sure this is something that you want brought to school. We have had several situations where Apple devices have been misplaced.  If you do have an Apple device, please download the free “Find my iPhone” or “Find my iPad” application as it can be very helpful to us and to families to locate the device.  In addition, it is helpful to have a student’s name on the device and the case so that we can determine who it belongs to and return it.
