Hello BCS!

Welcome to the new BCS eNews, Connect5!  You received this message because your email address is correct in our PowerSchool database.  Please remember to contact the BCS office and update your contact information whenever changes take place (phone numbers, emails, addresses, etc.).

It was another great week at BCS!  Smiles, energy and a passion to learn continued.  If you haven’t “liked” Birmingham Covington School on Facebook yet, please do so to check out pictures from the past week’s experiences and learning that we post.

You may recall that our instructional specialist (IS) was hired as an elementary principal in Gibraltar at the start of this year.  I wanted to share with you that we have completed our search process for our new IS and are excited to welcome Pauline Roberts to this important instructional leadership position where she will support teacher growth, student intervention and enrichment.  Pauline’s instructional expertise coupled with her creativity and innovative approach to teaching and learning are a perfect match for this position in supporting BCS efforts toward our vision of inspiring “students to lead in the global community through a passion for learning, innovating, and inquiry & design.  We have begun the search process for our new 5/6 math and science teacher to partner with Rick Joseph.  We will complete a rigorous and thorough search with the intention of having our new team member in place by the start of the second semester.  While leaving the classroom will be an emotional change for Pauline, she is incredibly excited for this leadership opportunity positively impacting BCS even more broadly while still allowing her to work and learn directly with the Joberts team.

Q1 REPORT CARDS & FALL PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES are coming…

Report Cards will be released tomorrow, Monday, November 10.  Grade 3/4 cards will be sent home with students and grades 5-8 cards will be available online via PowerSchool.   Also on this day, we will be sending home individual NWEA MAP reports for each student.   Parent/Teacher conferences will be Wednesday, November 19 and Thursday, November 20 from 1-4 PM and 5-8 PM.  3/4 and 5/6 digital sign-ups and the 7/8 conference letter will be available on Monday, November 3.  Remember the Book Fair is open in the media center during conferences.  Click here to volunteer!  For an important 3/4 district message to parents click the following link:

NOVEMBER is WORLD DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH-join us for a “BLUE” OUT ON FRIDAY NOV. 14TH

November is World Diabetes Awareness Month, and Friday, November 14 marks World Diabetes Day-an annual worldwide call for action and education to raise awareness of a disease effecting our global community.  During the month of November countries and cities throughout the world are participating in events to raise awareness and call for urgent action to tackle the diabetes epidemic.  Diabetes currently affects more than 371 million people worldwide and is expected to affect 552 million by 2030.  In the US alone a new case of diabetes is diagnosed every 30 seconds and more than 1.9 million people are diagnosed each year.  More than 3 million Americans have Type 1 Diabetes, the type of diabetes most often diagnosed in children.  It is NOT a product of unhealthy eating or lack of physical activity.  It is an autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food.  T1D usually strikes in childhood, adolescence, or young adulthood, and lasts a lifetime.  Currently there is no cure. Just to survive, people with T1D must take multiple injections of insulin daily or continually infuse insulin through a pump.  In support of World Diabetes Day, and those families in our school and community, affected by this disease the BCS student body will be viewing a mini-documentary this week entitled "One Day" discussing the burden and dangers of T1D and how the family must take T1D into account with every activity.  During your children's lunch period this Thursday, November 13, an information table will be set-up outside the lunchroom where kids can stop by to read more about diabetes and ask questions.

Scholastic Book Fair Comes to BCS

Our BCS Scholastic Book Fair runs from November 17-20, 2014 with set-up on November 14th.  This is a great time to volunteer!  Please give an hour or two of your time to help out at the book fair.  Click here to sign up!  If you can give a different amount of time, please sign up for the time closest to when you can help out and note what time you can give in the comments section.  Money raised through the book fair goes toward books and programs from our Media Center.  Please help spread the word - it takes many hands to make a successful book fair!  Sign up today and feel free to contact Ann Truesdell or Maureen Shannon with questions.

New Email System

We have started transitioning to a new eNews system starting with last week’s WAG.  The new system uses email addresses contained in our PowerSchool database.  During the transition, current BCS parents/guardians should receive duplicate email messages, one from the former eNews system (this version of the WAG) and one from the new system (check for that message).  We will denote on the email which system the email is coming from.  If you do not receive another email noted from our new system “Connect5”, please contact Sally Battle, our counseling secretary, by email at sbattle@birmingham.k12.mi.us with your correct email address so that your email information in PowerSchool can be verified.  If you no longer have a student at BCS, but would like to continue receiving information about special events and other news via email, please update your contact information here: http://goo.gl/DNNIwe.  By the way, the new Connect5 system also allows us to communicate to parents via text messages and phone calls as another means of communication, so look for the occasional text and listen for the occasional phone call with important news from BCS!  Here’s to another great week!

Character Connections Word of the week:  HONESTY

Infuse this word into your conversations/lessons with your family as a character education focus.  There will be a new word every two weeks.

  • “Dishonest people conceal their faults from themselves as well as others, honest people know and confess them.” – Christian Nevell Bovee
  • “Honesty is the first chapter of the book of wisdom.” – Thomas Jefferson
  • “Be true to your work, your word, and your friend.” – Henry David Thoreau

Join the BCS Web Team

The BCS Web Team is always looking for new volunteer support on our team.  Assistance could come in various technical levels.  If any of the below areas interest you, please contact parent leader Loran Brooks at loran@loranbrooks.com for questions and/or if interested in helping on the team.

  1. Content editor and quality assurance -- review the site for content, clarity, ease of use, and general “from a parent” perspective.
  2. Update of non-HTML content -- we have quite a bit of “stuff” that can be updated without need to edit the actual HTML of the site.
    • Google Docs -- the Google calendar and staff directory (Kathy is handling this quite well now)
    • The Email Forwarder List from the GoDaddy web server. This takes all the PTSA positions and forwards all the generic bcsonline.info emails to the correct personal emails. This is worth a good quality check.
  1. Website Apprentice -- We have typically provided a copy of Dreamweaver to web team members. Apprenticing means starting out on the simple pages and getting to know the structure and how to edit the site.
  2. Website Editors -- Getting to know the structure of the site and how to edit and maintain the navigation system

JOIN TEAM FITZ IN THE 3-DAY

To continue our Serve Locally efforts, let’s keep our support of Karen Fitzgerald going by joining the BCS community “Team Fitz” in the Susan G Komen 3-Day Walk Summer 2015.  For more information, contact Elizabeth Cook or Susie Englehart.  To sign up for the 3-Day on August 7-9, 2015 in the Detroit area, click here, then click on “Register and Join a Team”.  The team name is “Team Fitz” and the password to join is “teamfitz”.

SUPPORT THE BIRMINGHAM EDUCATION FOUNDATION (BEF)

The week of October 27th marked the kick-off of our Birmingham Education Foundation’s Annual Fund Campaign. This year, the theme is “Where can inspiration take our children?”  The BEF’s generous grants to schools in our district truly help make Birmingham Public Schools unique.  Plus, the BEF’s support of BCS specifically, has enhanced our students’ experience at our great school awarding us 2 of the 3 grants for which we submitted last year.  When considering your charitable giving options as the year comes to a close, we hope you choose a donation to BEF.  To find out more about the mission and purpose of BEF click here or go ahead and make an online donation now.  Thank you for your consideration!

2ND QUARTER CHOICE HOUR ANNOUNCEMENTS

Many thanks to the families that turned in their student’s QII choice hour selection sheets on or before the deadline!  Hand scheduling 654 students is a daunting task for Kathy.  It is not a perfect process and sometimes mistakes are made.  Moving forward, list more than one choice each day that your child will be attending choice hour – three to four choices are preferred!  This helps with classes that go to lottery.  List the actual names of the classes not THE ARTS or ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES or SPORTS.  Continuing classes like Forensics, Yearbook, RoboTech need to be listed as a choice.  If you do not include it then we will not schedule your child in the continuing class.  Lastly, please include payment with the choice hour selection sheet if your child will be attending a fourth/fifth day of choice hour.

2nd Quarter Choice Hour classes began on Wednesday November 5th

Choice Hour change forms are available in the office and online.  The deadline for requesting a Choice Hour class change is Thursday November 13th by 4:00 PM.  ALL Choice Hour changes that are approved will go into effect on Monday November 17th.  Choice Hour drop refunds/credits will be processed for classes dropped during the Choice Hour change period.  No refunds/credits will be processed after the Thursday November 13th deadline.  Students can drop out of a choice hour class at any time during the quarter.

Thank you for always supporting the Choice Hour program!

Choice Hour is not optional!  Students are required to attend Choice Hour three days per week.  If you are requesting that your child is waived from the Choice Hour program then visit www.bcsonline.info for a waiver form.  Waivers require signature approval from Mr. Morawski or Mr. Hill.

Thank you for always supporting the Choice Hour program!

BCS LEGO ROBOTICS

Once again, the award winning BCS Lego Robotics "Cobra Crafters" are gearing up for another wonderful season of FLL Lego League. Please join us Fridays, after Choice Hour, from 4:10-6:00 (unless otherwise communicated on our Shutterfly Team Blog). Any Team Members added moving forward will automatically be moved in mentor mode and placed in "Tournament Training". There is a lot of fun to be had for ALL students, levels, strengths, disabilities, and ages welcome. We will learn about the overall theme, unique each year. This year the theme is "EDUCATION".  See you in 600c this Friday! Bring your curiosities and creativity! GO BCS Cobra Crafters!  If you have interest or any questions, kindly contact Coach Stephanie Co stephaniejoy213@gmail.com, or call/text 248.416.7447 for more information. *Parent volunteers are welcome and needed.
