WAG Header

June 8, 2014

Hello BCS!

The final week of school with our students will prove to be a joyous one!  We begin the week tomorrow with our annual Move-Up Day where students and teachers have the opportunity to meet the new members of their classroom teams.  Tuesday evening brings our annual 8th grade ceremony and celebration, and Wednesday the fun continues with Wacky Recess.  Finally, we close out the week on Thursday with our 3/4 fun day at BCS, 5/6 trip to Skateworld and Thunderbird Lanes and the 7/8 trip to Cedar Point finishing with a half day on Friday beginning with the 7/8 breakfast in the cafeteria.  What a celebratory week indeed and we look forward to finishing strong!

You may have noticed in the WAG this year that we added a title called “Community News Follows…” for community to sort of separate BCS News from the greater BPS Community News in hope that it would help you navigate the large amount of information.  Based on some recent feedback, we are going to see if sectioning out the WAG further might be helpful to our families.  To that end, in this week’s WAG, you will notice some of the following highlighted sections to which we hope you will become accustomed:

·         All BCS News

·         The 7/8 Team News

·         The 5/6 Team News

·         The 3/4 Team News

·         Athletics/PE News

·         (others that may be needed)

We hope you find this helpful to you in navigating the WAG more efficiently based on news pertaining to your family.

One last reminder:   Move-Up Day is tomorrow we look forward to this truly exciting day as it provides a wonderful transition experience for our students.  Move-Up day for all 2014-15 BCS 3-8 grade students will be on Monday, June 9 from 9:00-10:30 AM.  Students will meet your new teachers and classmates. Our new parents are welcome to stay in the Media Center for presentations by Patricia and me beginning at 9:15 AM. We, along with our support staff, will discuss topics of interest for new families.  Please note our 8th graders will enjoy a special assembly in the gym with the energetic professional Frisbee duo, The Flying Aces from 9:00-10:30 AM.  Additionally, that evening, please plan to attend our returning Move-Up Night for Parents.  On Monday, June 9, parents of 5th graders and new 6th graders (though all are welcome) can join us in the Media Center from 6:00-6:30 PM where representatives from the 5/6 team will discuss how the daily schedule for your student for next school year and share some tips for success. 1st Quarter 2014-2015 Choice Hour selection sheets were distributed the week of May 19th.  Choice Hour selection sheets were due Tuesday May 27th. There are still many students that have not turned in a QI selection sheet.  You will be notified via email if we have not received one from your child.  Choice hour classes with openings will be attached as many classes are already closed.   Also, please include proper payment with your Choice Hour selections if you are signing your child up for a 4th and 5th day of Choice Hour.

Due to a change in scheduling, the Quarter I Choice Hour Selection Sheets for Grades 5 and 6, and Grades 7 and 8, found on the website were incorrect. The following classes are affected:

·         BCS Cross Country Team (6-8) with Mrs. Geisler will be held on Thursday, not Wednesday.

We apologize for this mistake. The Selection Sheets on the website have been corrected. If you need to make a correction to your Selection Sheet that has already been submitted, Kathy Juriga will accept these changes by email or with a new paper copy. (Please indicate if it is a new paper copy.) If you have not already turned in a selection sheet, please submit a paper Selection Sheet as soon as possible. The deadline was Tuesday, May 27. Thank you.

The best predictor of summer reading loss or summer reading gain is whether or not students read during the summer. In order to prevent summer reading loss, the Birmingham Education Foundation and The Jeffares Group are sponsoring a district –wide summer reading challenge, Bee A Reader!, for all BPS students entering grades K-5. Students who want to join in the fun need to commit to reading 800 minutes this summer. Students who meet this reading challenge goal will participate in a special celebration this fall at their school! To learn more about this program, and to encourage your student to Bee A Reader visit: http://bee-a-reader.birmingham.k12.mi.us

The Jeffares group has partnered with Birmingham Public Schools to support our district-wide summer reading program and you can too! For each house bought or sold THE JEFFARES GROUP will donate a portion of commissions, matched 1:1 by Max Broock to develop summer reading programs in the district. To learn more visit: http://www.thejeffaresgroup.com

If you are planning to partake in the BPS Academic Summer School Program (July 21-August 8), please complete your registration by Sunday, June 8th.  This will allow time for the Community Education Department to collect an evaluation from your child’s teacher before the end of the school year.  This evaluation is critical to the success of the summer school program as it will give the summer staff immediate insight to each student’s strengths and it will also tell the teachers on which areas they should focus with each student.  Online registration is available at www.communityed.net for this and many other great programs. or call 248-203-3800

To the Staff, Students and Parents,

As the result of the many changes in our economy, staffing and budgets over the past few years, the Operations Department is continuing our annual survey of the  Custodial, Transportation, Food Service and Maintenance & Grounds departments as well as a new Energy & Sustainability survey.   Each survey takes about 5 minutes to fill out and the continued success of these departments depends on your continued support and input.Below you will find a link to the surveys, I know this is an extremely busy time of the year for everyone but your input is valued.  We have again made improvements over the last few years which can be directly attributed to these annual survey results and comments!
