Move-Up day is approaching and our families will be receiving the Move-Up Day along with class placement information in the mail this week. We look forward to this truly exciting day as it provides a wonderful transition experience for all our students. Please note on Move-Up Day, our 8th graders will enjoy a special assembly in the gym with the energetic professional Frisbee duo, The Flying Aces! Move-Up day for all new 3-8 grade students will be on Monday, June 9 from 9:00-10:30 AM. Students will meet their new teachers and classmates. Our new parents are welcome to stay in the Media Center for presentations by Patricia and me beginning at 9:15 AM. We, along with our support staff, will discuss topics of interest for new families.
Additionally, please note our returning Move-Up Night for Parents. On Monday, June 9, parents of 5th graders and new 6th graders can join us in the Media Center from 6:00-6:30 PM where representatives from the 5/6 team will discuss how the daily schedule for your student for next school year and share some tips for success. Parents of 7th graders and new 8th graders will meet immediately following from 6:30pm-7pm to learn more about the transition to 7th grade next school year. Please plan on joining us for these informational meetings.
Extended window: If you haven’t already, please complete our parent survey as part of looking ahead at our efforts as a BCS school community for continuous improvement. The survey will take about 20 minutes to complete and will provide us great insight into our community’s perceptions of BCS helping inform our school improvement process and plans for the 2014-15 school year and beyond. DRESS CODE REMINDER-SPRING IS FINALLY HERE!!!!--As the weather gets warmer and shorts, skirts, and tank tops come out, please take a moment to review the dress code with your child click Student Planner Dress Code on page 10 of the student handbook. Please help your child to remember that shorts/skirts must be below the child’s fingertips and tank tops must have wide enough straps so that undergarments cannot be seen. If a student is not wearing the appropriate clothing to meet dress code, a call will be placed to a parent to have an appropriate item of clothing brought up for the student to change into. CHILDRENS BOOK DRIVE TO SUPPORT A LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL-Learn Globally, Serve Locally! As part of our theme serve locally and our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair, we will be collecting new or gently used children's books from May 19-June 3 in the BCS lobby. All the books collected will be donated to Edison Elementary in Madison Heights. Edison’s water pipes burst this past winter and they lost all of their K-3 classroom libraries and many books in the main library that services the entire school (grades K-5). In partnering with them, they are looking forward to moving back into their building this fall and are so grateful that our BCS community has offered to help them rebuild their libraries. Please bring your children's book donations (gently used or new) to the area to the right of the main office.
END OF YEAR PARTY FOR 6,7,8TH GRADES
Dear Parents-The Spirit Committee is hosting a End of the Year Party for Middle School students (6th, 7th and 8th), sponsored by the PTSA, on Friday, June 6th from 6-8 PM. The event includes an Open Gym, Ice Cream, Candy Hunt, Music, ITunes Gift Card Raffle, Snacks & Drinks. The price is $3.00 if students pay early (includes 2 raffle tickets)and $5.00 at the door (includes 1 raffle ticket). Students can buy tickets at all lunches Mon., June 2nd – Fri., June 6th. Students may purchase more raffle tickets at the party, 2 for $1.00, and these extra proceeds will be donated to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

YEARBOOKS ARE IN!!!!
Distribution of pre-ordered yearbooks is tentatively scheduled for Friday, June 6, 2014. Yearbooks will be delivered to academic lab/homeroom classrooms and distributed to students who pre-ordered prior to 5/31/14.
Sales of the remaining yearbooks (there is a limited number of these available) will begin at 7:50 on Monday morning, June 9, 2014. Sales will take place in front of the Media Center. The cost of a yearbook is $45. Yearbooks may be paid for in cash or a check, made payable to Birmingham Covington School. Sale hours will be 7:50-8:20 on both Monday and Tuesday (if there are any copies left after Monday). In addition, yearbooks may be purchased from the front office throughout the day.

The best predictor of summer reading loss or summer reading gain is whether or not students read during the summer. In order to prevent summer reading loss, the Birmingham Education Foundation and The Jeffares Group are sponsoring a district –wide summer reading challenge, Bee A Reader!, for all BPS students entering grades K-5. Students who want to join in the fun need to commit to reading 800 minutes this summer. Students who meet this reading challenge goal will participate in a special celebration this fall at their school!
